Writing challenge #7 (Mid-May 2006) !

I'm torn. On one hand, kudos to [livejournal.com profile] amanfalath for remembering that there is such a thing as monthly challenges in this community and anti-kudos to me for forgetting that it is, khem-khem, my turn to deliver one. On the other hand, let's be honest - my last challenge generated zero writing activity. So here's a challenge, but feel free to ignore it entirely and turn to [livejournal.com profile] amanfalath for sager advice:

A five franc piece is lost. A five franc piece is found. Someone buys something they really needed. Someone doesn't buy something they really wanted. A third party observes and draws conclusions.

Discuss. While discussing, keep in mind that there are two ways to go about this, an easy ways and a hard way. The easy way will involve characters that, one feels, intuitively fit the role; for instance, Montparnasse as the loser of the coin and Eponine as the finder, or Cosette as the loser and Gavroche as the finder, and Enjolras or Combeferre as the observer of both and drawer of righteous conclusions about the unfair dynamics of a capitalist society. However, if you're not one for an easy way out, - and I hope you all aren't - take a second to think how to make this challenge a real challenge and have it work with less obvious character choices.

Ohh, that's a good one. I'll have to try and think of something good-- and stop being lazy for long enough to write it. XD

So what can roughly be bought for five francs?

Besides Fatine...

Just wondering so I can properly write this story.
(yes I know that was mean, bad Erised!)

Depends on what you want to buy with them. Compared to today's standards, lodging was cheap and material commodities were expensive, so a franc could be equivalent to anywhere between five and thirty modern dollars.
